Nevada Department of Corrections Selects OnMed to Expand Correctional Healthcare with On-Site Clinical Care Across Three Facilities

Nevada's Department of Corrections is implementing a new model using the OnMed CareStation™ to expand on-site clinical care, reduce off-site medical transports, and improve access to timely healthcare treatment.

In the News

OnMed has been selected by the Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC) through a formal state competitive procurement process to deploy its CareStation across three facilities:

  • High Desert State Prison
  • Lovelock Correctional Center
  • Northern Nevada Correctional Center

This initiative reflects a growing shift toward delivering healthcare directly within correctional environments, improving access while reducing operational strain.

The Challenge: Delivering Healthcare in Correctional Facilities

Correctional healthcare systems face increasing pressure due to rising costs, staffing shortages, and the logistical complexity of transporting incarcerated individuals off-site for routine medical care.

Traditional care delivery models often require:

  • Coordinating off-site appointments and transportation
  • Allocating correctional officers for escorts
  • Managing scheduling delays and security risks

As a result, individuals may wait days or weeks for care, allowing routine conditions to escalate into more serious health issues that are more costly and difficult to manage.

How Can Correctional Facilities Improve Healthcare Access?

Correctional systems can improve healthcare delivery by adopting models that:

  • Provide on-site clinical care to reduce off-site transports
  • Expand access to clinicians through hybrid care models
  • Use integrated diagnostic tools for real-time evaluation
  • Enable consistent monitoring of chronic conditions
  • Reduce delays that can lead to higher-acuity events

These approaches help improve both patient outcomes and operational efficiency across facilities.

A New Model: On-Site Clinical Care

On-site clinical care models bring comprehensive healthcare services directly into correctional facilities, enabling faster, more efficient treatment without the need for external visits.

With the OnMed CareStation™, patients can connect with licensed clinicians in real time, supported by integrated diagnostic tools such as a digital stethoscope, pulse oximeter, thermal scanner, and high-definition camera.

This approach allows many non-emergent conditions — including respiratory illnesses, musculoskeletal concerns, and routine check-ins — to be addressed immediately within the facility.

OnMed's CEO, Karthik Ganesh, explained:

"Correctional healthcare demands solutions that work alongside embedded systems, not complicate them. The CareStation extends NDOC's existing healthcare model to better support the needs of thousands of incarcerated individuals and NDOC staff. By bringing comprehensive, on-site clinical care directly into facilities, we're helping NDOC improve access, reduce avoidable transports, and deliver consistent, high-quality care to the individuals in their custody."

Nevada's Implementation: Expanding Access Across Three Facilities

Through its partnership with OnMed, NDOC is implementing three CareStations.

The solution was selected for its ability to integrate seamlessly with existing clinical workflows, expanding care capacity without requiring additional permanent staffing or new construction.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo noted the broader impact of the initiative:

"Expanding access to timely, high-quality medical care in Nevada's correctional facilities is critical to protecting both public safety and taxpayer dollars. By bringing care stations directly to our facilities, we anticipate decreased overtime costs, fewer emergency medical transports, and faster treatment."

Measurable Impact: Improving Efficiency and Outcomes

On-site clinical care delivery can address some of the most persistent challenges in correctional healthcare.

Across deployments:

  • 86% of cases are resolved on-site without requiring off-site referral
  • Patient satisfaction averages 4.96 out of 5
  • Visits are typically completed in approximately 20 minutes

By resolving non-emergent conditions within the facility, correctional systems can:

  • Reduce costly medical transports
  • Minimize staffing disruptions and overtime
  • Improve speed to diagnosis and treatment

Why This Matters Beyond Nevada

Nevada's implementation reflects a broader shift toward scalable, hybrid healthcare models designed to improve access in complex and resource-constrained environments.

As correctional systems nationwide look for ways to control costs while improving care delivery, on-site clinical care offers a practical and proven approach. By combining real-time clinician access with integrated diagnostic tools, this model helps ensure more consistent, timely care for underserved populations.
