OSHA Incident Rate

An OSHA incident rate, most commonly expressed as TRIR (Total Recordable Incident Rate), measures OSHA-recordable injuries per 100 full-time workers per year: (Incidents × 200,000) ÷ Total Hours Worked. The national private-industry average TRIR is around 2.3, with construction running slightly above at roughly 2.2, per BLS data.

Owners frequently use TRIR alongside a contractor's EMR as a combined safety screen; TRIR reflects incident frequency in near-real-time while EMR has a three-year lookback with a reporting lag, making TRIR the metric a contractor can move fastest. A wound treated immediately with basic first aid stays off the OSHA 300 log entirely, while the same wound treated hours later after infection sets in typically becomes recordable.
